Answer to English Grammar Question 22

Could you please explain the difference in usage of fast as in an adjective "He has a fast car" and fast as an adverb as in "He drives car"?

From member: Rolf Schiffer in Germany

Answer

Rolf: In 'He has a fast car', where 'fast' is an adjective, the word 'fast' is qualifying the noun car.
If it were to be an adverb, for example, 'He drives fast' or 'He drives the car fast' then the word 'fast' is qualifying the verb 'drives'. An adjective qualifies a noun and an adverb qualifies a verb.
